William Davies was the sole nominee for Mayor and was elected unanimously. Mr Dean was appointed secretary pending public advertisement of the position of town clerk.
At the May (1874) meeting of council, the following appointments were made:
Town Clerk and Treasurer: Mr F. C. DEAN
Surveyor (now the position of Borough Engineer): Mr K. MacFARLAND
Foreman of Works: Mr Thomas RAWDON
Rate Collector: Mr HONISS

Valuers: Messrs GUDGEON and J. CRAIG
Solicitor: Mr J. TYLER
Night Watchman: Mr J. GRAHAM
As it was necessary to have a Borough seal, it was decided to advertise for designs, with a prize of £5 for the one accepted. The winner was Mr PULLEIN. Council accepted his design but not his motto which was "The more we are crushed the more we yield".
